Water conservation is essential for both the environment and your wallet. Saving water saves energy by reducing the amount of electricity or gas used to heat your water.
Tips for saving water at home
- Install water-saving fixtures: Efficient showerheads, faucets and toilets can significantly reduce water usage without sacrificing performance.
- Fix leaks promptly: A dripping faucet can waste over 3,000 gallons of water a year. Regularly check and repair leaks in faucets, toilets and pipes.
- Run a full dishwater: Modern dishwashers use less water than washing dishes by hand. Make sure to run it only when it’s full.
- Efficient laundry: Washing machines are responsible for about 15% of indoor water use. Opt for high efficiency ENERGY STAR® certified models, use cold water when possible and always wash full loads.
- Water plants wisely: Water your garden during the early morning or late evening to minimize evaporation. Use mulch to retain moisture in the soil.
- Shorten your showers:
- Reducing your shower time by just a few minutes can save gallons of water each day.
- A 10-minute shower can use up to 25 gallons of water. Switching to an efficient showerhead can cut this usage by half.
