As part of Nuclear Science Day in October, Grand Gulf Nuclear Station’s chapter of Women in Nuclear hosted Discovering STEM Day at A.W. Watson Elementary School in Port Gibson, Mississippi.

WIN presented several interactive STEM-related tables to approximately 800 students from pre-K through 6th grade along with their teachers.

Students enjoyed a wide array of activities, from assembling and programming robots to a “squishy circuits and structure” table using spaghetti and marshmallows. They learned how nuclear workers protect themselves from contamination through a demonstration using Cheetos, rubber gloves, cups and spoons, while the Neutron Dance activity taught them how electricity is produced and distributed.

Other hands-on learning activities included a Wimshurst electrostatic generator machine, a radiation protection dress-up station, snap circuit kits and Atomic Story Time.
