Mi Historia: Alvaro Reyes on perseverance and continuing his family’s legacy

Alvaro Reyes reflects on his family and experiences that made him who he is today
My name is Alvaro Reyes, and I currently reside in Port Arthur, Texas. My family moved to the United States when I was eight years old, and I became a U.S. citizen in my late teens. Although the United States isn’t my place of birth, I’m proud to call it home.
My parents worked diligently to provide stability for our family. From 2000 to 2002, my mother worked at the same Entergy Texas location where I currently work. It makes me proud to be part of a company that gave my mother an opportunity when she was trying to set her roots and pursue the American dream. Some of you may be familiar with Ana’s Mexican Bakery located in Port Arthur, which is owned by my family.
Like most people who move away from their hometown, I often miss being immersed in the culture back in Mexico. Over time, I realized that I don’t have to be at a crossroads about my roots in Mexico and living in the United States, because si soy de aqui, y tambien soy de alla (I’m from there, but I’m also from here).
Working hard, setting goals, and having discipline despite life challenges allowed me to finish high school, go to college, and obtain my associate degree in instrument technology. I’ve been with Entergy for seven years, and I couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunity to work and grow here. My current goals are to become a team lead and hopefully, one day, a plant manager.
I am family-oriented person. When I’m not working, I’m doing things around the house, having cookouts with the family, watching sports, or on the water riding my jet ski. I love to travel and have visited several countries around the world.
