Arkansas Nuclear One Returns to Full Service after Successful Refueling
11/21/2019
RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas Nuclear One’s Unit 1 returned to service Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 6:56 p.m. following the completion of its 28th successful refueling and maintenance outage. Control room workers returned the plant to operation, sending electricity to the grid after a planned shutdown that began Oct 5.
“Entergy and the ANO team are committed to providing safe, secure and reliable electricity to the community’s residents and businesses,” said John Dinelli, ANO site vice president. “In addition to the commitment of more than 1,100 ANO team members, an additional 1,200 contract workers supported this outage. We appreciate the professionalism they demonstrated; the evaluations and maintenance conducted will position this plant as a good community asset for years to come.”
During the scheduled refueling and maintenance outage, trained professionals replaced fuel in the reactor. They also inspected and upgraded hundreds of pipes, pumps, electrical components and other equipment. Hundreds of thousands work hours were performed.
ANO is a dual unit site, housing two nuclear reactors. Unit 2 continued operating during the Unit 1 refueling outage.
Refueling outages are necessary to fuel nuclear plants every 18 to 24 months, allowing safe and reliable electricity in a cost-effective manner. Refuels also provide an economic boost for local businesses and temporary housing providers.
