Nearly $400,000 distributed to make a difference for New Orleanians

NEW ORLEANS – Middle school students here in the Crescent City are among the beneficiaries of Entergy Charitable Foundation grants for the first half of 2016. FirstLine Schools is just one example of the more than 80 nonprofit organizations in seven states recently awarded grants totaling $1.5 million from the company’s foundation. Around the Crescent City, organizations received nearly $400,000 to help New Orleanians.

“Making a difference in our community through the Entergy Charitable Foundation is one of the many ways we power life,” said Charles Rice, president and CEO of Entergy New Orleans, Inc. “We’re proud to give back in ways that help the local organizations that serve our city prosper.”

In addition to FirstLine Schools – a group that offers personalized learning to include 1-to-1 computer-based classrooms that help middle school students succeed – programs supported by 2016 grants are:

  • Ellis Marsalis Center for Music, Inc. education program supporting the development of children and youth through a holistic program built around music education that includes nutrition, tutoring, counseling, career exploration and technical skills training.
  • Family Service of Greater New Orleans for the ART Initiative promoting positive student performance outcomes.
  • Louisiana Children’s Museum’s Early Learning Village, including a literacy center, parent-teacher resource center, nature center, early care and learning center, theater and performing arts center, edible garden and more.
  • Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation for Culture-Up, an innovation incubator for creative entrepreneurs.
  • Metropolitan YMCA YES! Adult Education Program focused on literacy and workforce development.
  • New Orleans Recreation Development Foundation’s Youth Program Quality Intervention and Teen Career Camps helping teens develop professional interests and skills through STEM camps.
  • Policy Institute for the Children of Louisiana, Inc. to support best-practice research on how to provide high-quality child care to more at-risk children across the state and support actions to improve the quality and accessibility of early childhood education in Louisiana.
  • Propeller: A Force for Social Innovation’s Water Challenge to help transform New Orleans into a global hub of innovation and water management.
  • Start the Adventure in Reading, Inc.’s free, after-school tutoring program for at-risk first- through third-grade public school students in need of individualized reading instruction.
  • Troy Andrews Foundation’s Trombone Shorty Academy where students from underserved communities participate in an after-school music education program taught by some of the city's most successful musicians.
