Entergy Donates $1M to The Power to Care Fund

01/04/2015

NEW ORLEANS – At tonight’s Pelicans game against the Washington Wizards, Entergy leaders will present $1 million in charitable donations to Louisiana agencies committed to helping those in need.

The donations represent funds raised by Entergy customers, employees and shareholders to The Power to Care Fund. The check will be presented jointly by Charles Rice, president and CEO of Entergy New Orleans, Inc., and Phillip May, president and CEO of Entergy Louisiana, LLC and Entergy Gulf States Louisiana, L.L.C., to the New Orleans Council on Aging and The Salvation Army, which administer The Power to Care program in Louisiana.

Of the just over $1 million raised, the New Orleans Council on Aging is receiving $172,793 in assistance thanks to $103,528 in customer and employee donations and $69,265 in shareholder matching funds. The Salvation Army is receiving $828,197 in assistance that includes $581,676 in customer and employee donations and $246,521 in shareholder matching funds.

While systemwide 2014 totals are not yet available, in 2013 The Power to Care provided more than $2 million in assistance to 13,814 elderly and disabled Entergy customers around the four-state area to keep the lights on and stay comfortable during extreme temperatures. This resulted in $168,271 in assistance for 996 Entergy New Orleans customers and $435,693 in assistance for 3,054 Entergy Louisiana and Entergy Gulf States Louisiana customers.

The Power to Care program provides emergency bill-pay assistance to seniors and disabled customers in crisis. New and one-time customer contributions to The Power to Care are matched 1:1 by shareholder contributions – up to $500,000 annually. Employee contributions also are matched 1:1 by shareholders.

“The Power to Care supports Entergy’s commitment to improving our communities and empowering our customers,” said Patty Riddlebarger, director of corporate social responsibility. “And because none of the funds are used for administrative purposes – 100 percent of donations are used to pay the utility bills of those who need it most.”
