Entergy Louisiana, Entergy New Orleans Seek Permission to Transfer Algiers Operations
10/30/2014
The transfer is intended to streamline utility regulation in the city
NEW ORLEANS – Entergy Louisiana, LLC and Entergy New Orleans, Inc. asked the Council of the City of New Orleans on Thursday to approve the transfer of Entergy Louisiana’s electric utility operations in Algiers to Entergy New Orleans.
Entergy Louisiana provides electrical service to some 22,000 customers in Algiers, the only portion of Orleans Parish the utility serves. Entergy New Orleans serves the rest of the parish, providing electricity to approximately 169,000 customers and natural gas to roughly 100,000 customers, including 12,000 customers in Algiers.
The transfer is intended to streamline utility regulation in the city. The City Council regulates Entergy New Orleans and the Algiers portion of Entergy Louisiana’s business. The Louisiana Public Service Commission is responsible for regulating the remainder of Entergy Louisiana’s operations, which stretch from the Gulf Coast to the Arkansas border.
Entergy Louisiana agreed to file an application to transfer its Algiers operations to Entergy New Orleans as part of its 2013 Algiers rate case before the City Council.
“Consolidating utility service in New Orleans under a single utility and a single retail regulator will streamline the regulatory process, saving time and resources for both the companies and the council,” said Charles Rice, president and CEO of Entergy New Orleans. “We believe the transfer will be essentially seamless for Algiers residents and current Entergy New Orleans customers. All customers will continue to receive the same high-quality service, and Entergy Louisiana’s Algiers customers will maintain the phased-in base rates approved by the council in the rate case settlement in July.”
The transaction will not result in a reduction in the number of employees serving Orleans Parish.
Entergy Louisiana, LLC and Entergy Gulf States Louisiana, L.L.C. provide electric service to more than one million Louisiana customers. Additionally, Entergy Gulf States Louisiana provides natural gas service to nearly 93,000 customers in the greater Baton Rouge area. With operations in southern, central and northeastern Louisiana, the companies are subsidiaries of Entergy Corporation.
Entergy New Orleans, Inc. is an electric and gas utility that serves Louisiana’s Orleans Parish. The company currently provides electricity to more than 169,000 customers on the east bank of the Mississippi River in Orleans Parish and natural gas to more than 100,000 customers throughout Orleans Parish.
