Entergy New Orleans’ free EV chargers open for public use at City Park

01/23/2023

NEW ORLEANS – Visitors to New Orleans City Park who drive electric vehicles can now utilize three electric vehicle charging stations, which were recently installed and are free for the public.

Entergy New Orleans has installed an EV charging station at the Bayou Oaks at City Park Driving Range on Filmore Ave. that can charge two electric vehicles at once, and two additional charging stations at the City Park Reunion Shelter on Friederichs Ave., which are capable of charging four cars.

“City Park is honored to host these charging stations, which provide an essential service to a growing number of our visitors who drive EVs,” said City Park Conservancy President and CEO Cara Lambright. “We are grateful for the opportunity to support Entergy’s innovative efforts to lower carbon emissions, which benefits our Park and surrounding community.”

“This is a unique example of how a community partnership can encourage more people to come to our city and enjoy all it has to offer, including the historical and cultural offerings at New Orleans City Park,” said Deanna Rodriguez, President and CEO of Entergy New Orleans. “The progress we’re making to provide equitable access to free charging stations across New Orleans will go a long way in helping New Orleans grow and thrive as we move towards a cleaner energy future.”

The City Park installations are part of a broader EV charging station program run by Entergy New Orleans in partnership with the City of New Orleans. In total, Entergy New Orleans will install 30 charging stations at 25 locations across New Orleans, primarily located at NORD facilities, libraries, and public parks.

City Park joins 12 other active Entergy EV charging station locations throughout New Orleans. Additional sites include Pontchartrain Park, East NOLA Regional Library, Copelin-Bird Multi-Service Center, Marsalis Harmony Park, Digby Park, Audubon Zoo, Audubon Fly, Laffite Greenway, Rosenwald Rec, Coliseum Square, Conrad Playground and Keller Library.

The partnership is a result of the 2018 Entergy rate case, in which the City Council approved Entergy New Orleans working with the city to develop the public charging program. The EV charging station locations were determined by a public online survey that ran from January until March 2021.

About City Park Conservancy
City Park Conservancy is the 501(c)3 that operates the day-to-day care of City Park, in partnership with the City Park Improvement Association, and oversees programming, fundraising, and membership management of the 1,300-acre Park. For over 170 years, City Park has provided access to abundant natural and cultural resources to residents of the region and visitors from around the world. The Park’s 1,300 acres make it one of the largest urban parks in the United States. City Park is a popular place to fish on the bayou, picnic, experience safe outdoor play, or engage in athletic pursuits—as evidenced by more than 3.2 million unique visits each year. The Park’s annual operating budget is largely derived from self-generated activities, often weather dependent. The COVID-19 pandemic and Hurricane Ida, which significantly affected revenue-generating facilities due to restriction closures, highlighted the vital importance of diversifying revenue streams. Through these challenges, the Park’s walking trails, urban forest, and open spaces continue to be a respite to the public.
