09/15/2010
Entergy scores high in climate strategy and corporate citizenship
NEW ORLEANS – The Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes again named Entergy Corporation to their World Index and North America Index for 2010. Entergy was one of only five U.S. utility companies selected to the world index and one of only 10 utilities selected to the North America index.
Entergy has been recognized by the DJSI North America for nine consecutive years and listed on the DJSI World for five consecutive years – a distinction held by no other U.S. utility company.
"The operational and financial success we've achieved over the past decade is directly related to our efforts in sustainable business model that the DJSI recognizes," said J. Wayne Leonard, Entergy's chairman and chief executive officer. "As our record illustrates, Entergy employees embrace the moral responsibility to conduct business with a social conscience and in ways that positively impact the environment."
This year, Entergy performed highest or was ranked among the best in:
- Climate strategy.
- Environmental policy/management system.
- Corporate citizenship/philanthropy.
- Corporate governance.
- Occupational health and safety.
- Price and risk management.
The DJSI include sustainability leaders from each industry on a global and regional level, respectively. The annual review of the DJSI family is based on a thorough analysis of corporate economic, environmental and social performance, assessing issues such as corporate governance, risk management, branding, climate change mitigation, supply chain standards and labor practices. It accounts for general and industry specific sustainability criteria for each of the 57 sectors defined according to the Industry Classification Benchmark.
First published in 1999, the DJSI World covers the top 10 percent of the biggest 2,500 companies worldwide in terms of economic, environmental and social criteria. Entergy was one of only 22 utility companies selected to the DJSI World in 2010. The DJSI North America selects the top 20 percent in terms of sustainability from each industry sector of the 600 biggest North American companies on the Dow Jones Global Total Stock Market Index. The results were announced by Sustainable Asset Management, an investment boutique focused on sustainability investing, together with Dow Jones Indexes.
