Entergy’s Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Hosts Open House in Support of National Nuclear Science Week
11/04/2015
On October 28, Entergy’s Grand Gulf Nuclear Station hosted an open house for approximately 200 high school teachers and students to help build awareness of the many contributions of the nuclear science industry and highly-trained employees who operate the facility safely, securely and reliably.
Participating schools included high schools from Claiborne, Jefferson, Adams, Warren and Rankin counties.
The event took place to recognize National Nuclear Science Week - a national, broadly observed week-long celebration to focus local, regional and national interest on all aspects of nuclear science. NNSW takes place each year on the third week of October.
“It’s important that we promote education and STEM careers among Mississippi youth. We power lives among our owners, customers, employees and the communities we serve. Providing educational opportunities is just one of the ways Entergy gives back to the community and opens the door of possibility to potential nuclear engineers and technicians,” said Kevin Mulligan, Grand Gulf site vice president. “Community involvement is very important to our company. This event gave Grand Gulf the opportunity to not only showcase our outstanding and dedicated employees but educate our future leaders.”
Students participated in interactive breakout sessions focusing on important aspects of operating a nuclear power plant. They also learned about exciting career opportunities within the nuclear industry.
Nuclear Science Week is a partnership between the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History, located in Albuquerque, NM, and nuclear industry partners. Individuals from such organizations as the Nuclear Literacy Project, the American Nuclear Society, the North American Young Generation in Nuclear and the National Science Teachers Association comprise the NSW national steering committee that orchestrates NSW every year.
Sponsors for the 2015 Nuclear Science Week celebration include Albert I. Pierce Foundation, American Nuclear Society Oak Ridge/Knoxville Section, American Museum of Science & Energy, East Tennessee Health Physics Society, Idaho National Laboratories, Lockheed Martin/Sandia National Laboratories and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
