Beaumont, Texas -- While the 100-degree days of mid-summer may be behind us, Southeast Texans know there are still plenty of uncomfortably warm temperatures ahead. To help provide relief for those without air conditioning or the homeless, Entergy Texas, Inc. has provided a $1,000 grant to the Beaumont Chapter, Salvation Army, to help it keep the doors open to its cooling station through at least the end of September and as needed after that.
The cooling station is open at the Salvation Army's facility at 2350 IH-10 East from 9 a.m. until noon and 1-4 p.m. each Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. until noon and 1-3 p.m. each Friday.
Victoria Castillo, shelter manager for the Salvation Army, oversees the cooling station and notes that they serve 15 to 25 per day. They are, she said, homeless. "This is a great benefit for the people who come in out of the heat."
"We regularly partner with the Salvation Army on a number of projects," explained Vernon Pierce, customer service vice president for Entergy Texas, Inc. "Helping them keep the cooling station open during our blistering summers is one of those projects. In this case, the grant gives them the money to buy water and snacks for those who come in to cool off."
Staffing for the cooling station is provided by the Salvation Army.
